John G. E. Thompson
John Thompson is the eldest of four siblings, and the son of a former head-start teacher and a retired public school administrator. After graduating from high school and a brief college stint, John enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving four years on active duty as an intelligence specialist with a maritime surveillance squadron.
While in the service, John completed two years of undergraduate education and participated in deployments to Keflavik Iceland, Sigonella Sicily, Jeddah Saudi Arabia, and Roosevelt Roads Puerto Rico. John is the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal (Operation Desert Shield/Storm Veteran), and the U.S. Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbon.
Following his military service, John and his wife returned to Minnesota where John completed his undergraduate degree at St. Cloud State University (SCSU), graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Applied Psychology, and a minor in Speech Communications. At SCSU John was consistently on the Dean's List, resulting in his being inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi national academic honor society.
While studying psychology at SCSU, John found employment as a mental health worker assisting chronically mentally ill adults in a group home setting. Later John worked as a fraud analyst and systems specialist with a local mail order catalog company.
Upon graduation, John worked for a large financial services corporation setting up personal investment accounts, and later transitioned to a position on the company trading floor. As a trader, John obtained his Series 7 and 63 securities licenses.
While working full-time as a trader, John furthered his dream of developing his own small town legal practice when he attended the William Mitchell College of Law. In addition to working and attending law school, John also interned with a legal aid organization where he developed a strong affinity for the practice of family, consumer, and disability law. John also clerked for a personal injury attorney, and served as a student public defender in Minnesota's Tenth Judicial District.
For a number of years following his law school graduation, John served as a full-time practicing attorney with different legal services organizations in Alexandria and St. Cloud Minnesota, and has successfully represented hundreds of clients in a variety of practice areas and settings. John also worked as a Reference Staff Attorney for Thompson-West in Eagan, Minnesota, where he met his law partner, Nicole Anderson. John is admitted to practice before the Minnesota Supreme and Federal District Courts.
John married his high-school sweetheart in 1989, and together they are the parents of five children ranging in ages from four to nine years old. John is active in church and community activities, and as a compliment to his love of God, Country, Family, and the practice of law, is an avid St. Cloud State University Husky Hockey fan, who also enjoys his children's multitude of activities, Husky, Gopher, and Viking football, and hunting, fishing, reading, and traveling to warm tropical destinations with family and friends.
